What is a Boys and Girls Club?

Boys and Girls Clubs nurture young people's self-esteem by installing
in them a sense of belonging, competence, power and influence,
and usefulness. Boys and Girls Clubs of South Central Kansas, do this
daily by providing young people with one-on-one relationships with
caring adult professionals and fun, age-appropriate, well-rounded
programming.

OUR STORY

To help kids have a better chance against problems such as; gangs, street violence, and juvenile crime, the Boys & Girls Clubs
of South Central Kansas was opened in Sedgwick County in 1990.

The opening of the first Boys & Girls Club in 1990 was the result of a special partnership between; the founding board, United
Way of the Plains, Derby and Wichita School Districts, and several businesses which made the Club a reality. From that first Oaklawn Branch, the Boys and Girls Clubs of South Central Kansas Club have shown rapid growth.

Around the country, Boys & Girls Clubs have been providing creative programs for youth for more than 100 years. The scope
of the Boys & Girls Club movement in the U.S. now serves more than 5 million school age children every day through some 3,600 facilities.

Boys & Girls Clubs provide a safe haven and stimulating environment for kids in our community. Youth development professionals provide guidance, support, and supervision for activities to age appropriate groups. The Clubs do more than just give kids a
place to go after school and during the summer. They provide homework assistance and tutoring, performing arts, reading,
health education, computer training, character and leadership activities, entrepreneurship and sports programs for every child interested in participating. Each program area focuses on the youth development strategy of the club, and that is instilling in every child a sense of competence, belonging, power and influence, and usefulness. Above all the Boys and Girls Club is the Positive Place for Kids!
